A 4 'x 8' sheet of wood is always a good start, but for the HO scale, you can make funny) little more than an oval base with a coating or two (.

Gondola standard today is 40 meters long, the car 50 meters long, and most of the passengers and containers / vehicles for transporting cars are about 80 feet long. Thus, HO scale (1:87), is the same:

40 feet = 5.52 cm
50 feet = 6.89 cm
80 feet = 11.03 cm

Sun 10 coal cars (gondolas) will be more than 4 1 / 2 feet! N-Scale 1:160 (about half the size of the HO scale ... and you get almost double the space station for two!

Well, what scale PICK () depends in part on what you want the model! You could HO scale on a sheet of 4'x8 'plywood disadvantages, if you only have a small yard without having to go running trains (20 Valley Gondola from one extreme to another in the provision of making "too.

I have ten years of work on an N-level "platform-run design (around the walls of a room) modeling of the Union Pacific, Stockton Yard. I went with the N-scale in a few SKETChing recognize and allow, as the space of 10 x 12 meter area.

Suffice it to say that a unit of standard coal cars today 50-60 long ... the 23 feet or 12.5 meters wide, HO N

Good luck and feel free to do anything else that catches the spirit of Eugene.
